Did OpenAI Copy ‘iyO’?

OpenAI has quietly pulled all ads and videos for its $6.5B deal with Jony Ive’s startup, io, after a legal complaint from Google X spinout iyO over a trademark issue.

The case claims both sides met multiple times, and iyO says the name and product ideas are too similar. OpenAI still says the deal is moving forward.

• iyO claims OpenAI copied both the name and product concept for io after meetings in 2022 and 2025.

• OpenAI took down a blog post and a 9-minute video featuring Jony Ive and Sam Altman.

• The legal complaint says iyO's AI earbuds came first and are too close to what io is building.

This dispute could damage OpenAI’s clean image and delay its big move into AI hardware. Even if the deal isn't canceled, the claims raise questions about how original io’s product really is, especially with such a similar name and product idea.
