NASA’s AI Doctor for Mars

NASA and Google are teaming up to build an AI-powered medical assistant that will help keep astronauts healthy during future long missions to Mars. This system will work even when there’s no direct contact with Earth.
The AI assistant, called CMO-DA, will work through speech, text, and images using Google’s Vertex AI platform.
Tested on ankle injuries, ear pain, and side pain, it achieved up to 88% accuracy in diagnosis and treatment.
NASA plans to add more data, including medical device readings, and train it for space-specific conditions like microgravity effects.
Long missions mean astronauts can’t rely on quick help from Earth. An onboard AI doctor could be life-saving in space and may also bring new healthcare solutions back to Earth.
