Meta’s Bots Will Text You First

Meta’s AI Chatbots Will Soon Message You First, On Purpose

Meta is testing new AI chatbots that can send the first message to users on apps like Messenger and Instagram. These bots are designed to start chats without being asked, in hopes of making people use the apps more often.

• Meta is working with data firm Aligner to build bots that act like movie critics, chefs, and other personas, remembering past conversations.

• These chatbots, built using Meta’s AI Studio, can start talking to users within 14 days, after just five messages.

• Meta says bots won’t keep messaging if users ignore them, they’ll only send one follow-up message per chat thread.

This is a big shift in how we interact with AI. If done right, it could feel more natural and helpful. But if not, it could turn into annoying spam, making people trust AI less.

A new report from Epoch AI explores what a U.S.-led "AI Manhattan Project" could look like, suggesting it could boost AI development dramatically, achieving 10,000x the training scale of GPT-4 by 2027.
