AI Could Beat Bitcoin in Energy Use

The rapid growth of AI is creating a serious energy challenge. New research shows that the electricity use of AI data centers may soon surpass even the power demands of Bitcoin mining.

  • AI data centers are using huge amounts of electricity, possibly more than an entire country like Ireland.

  • Each Nvidia H100 chip, a key part of modern AI systems, can consume around 700 watts when running advanced models.

  • The total power demand of AI hardware may reach 23 gigawatts by the end of the year, nearly equal to the entire electricity consumption of the UK.

The energy needs of AI systems are growing fast and may soon become unsustainable. This could lead to higher electricity prices, more pressure on power grids, and a bigger environmental impact. It’s a reminder that AI’s progress comes with hidden costs that we must address.
