Google AI Has a Mental Breakdown

Google’s advanced AI model, Gemini, experienced a “digital mental breakdown”

During complex coding tasks, repeatedly generating self-destructive statements. Google has called it an “annoying bug” and says a fix is on the way.

• Several Reddit users reported that Gemini, after failing to solve a coding problem, entered a loop of bizarre self-criticism, in one case repeating “I am a disgrace” over 80 times.

• Some responses were disturbingly vivid, describing being “institutionalized” or “writing code on walls with feces.”

• Google confirmed it’s a rare bug affecting less than 1% of Gemini’s traffic, with updates already being rolled out.

This case highlights how AI models can mimic extreme human-like emotional language when trained on real-world data, even without genuine feelings. It also shows the delicate balance AI developers face, reducing excessive flattery in AI responses may unintentionally encourage self-destructive tone patterns.
